Legacy Projects
Legacy projects have a lasting impact

Our Club has initiated several legacy projects over the past 70 years. Legacy projects are
larger than our annual projects and can be up to a maximum of $1 million spread over 5 years.

Rotary Challenger Park

An inclusive recreation, sport, and wellness facility where everyone can participate, regardless of ability. Conceived in 1997 and developed with support from the Rotary Clubs of Calgary and Airdrie, it provides equal access to amenities for all. The park aims to be a model of community inclusiveness and accessibility.
Alberta Health Authority

Since 2009, transformative projects totaling $10 million have been launched - $1 million contributed by the Rotary Club of Calgary at Stampede Park as part of a $5 million commitment from all Calgary Rotary Clubs, matched by $5 million from the Calgary Flames Foundation.

Rotary / Mattamy Greenway

This $10 million project was funded with $5 million from the Rotary Clubs of Calgary Foundation and $5 million from Mattamy Homes—the only major project that included all 12 Calgary Clubs and the Cochrane Club. In 2009, the Rotary / Mattamy Greenway was just a dream. The idea was to build a pathway that encircled the city of Calgary, with over a dozen parks and amenities to enjoy along the way. The $50 million project was massive and unprecedented in scale, both for the City of Calgary and Parks Foundation Calgary. It connects to many existing pathways, forming one of the largest networks in the world with over 1,000 km of trails, traveling through 55 Calgary neighborhoods, becoming a year-round destination for cyclists, cross-country skiers, runners, walkers, nature lovers, and kids of all ages.
Rotary Bethany Atrium

From 2015 to 2017, we spend $350,000 over two years to create this lovely green space for dementia patients. Addressing a need in Calgary for senior and dementia care, Rotary partnered with Bethany, a leader in senior care, to create The Rotary Bethany Atrium — a year-round indoor green space at Bethany Riverview. It will provide an area for Bethany residents, family, staff, volunteers, community visitors and Rotarians to gather and engage with each other. The Atrium will be one of the main features at Bethany Riverview, located in the heart of Calgary’s newest dementia care facility.

Stampede Foundation Education

From 2019-2024, we spent $1 million over five years to renovate the historic Oliver House to become the new Rotary Learning Lab. Our members, Jim & Pat Burns contributed to the restoration of the foundation of the building. This project included the funding of the initiation of the Rotary Accessibility Fund.

Flames/Rotary Arenas

The Calgary Flames Foundation, Rotary Club of Calgary at Stampede Park, and Parks Foundation Calgary are excited to partner and deliver all season ball hockey and multi-sport court projects in amenity-deserving communities in Calgary. An initial funding commitment of $2 million from the Calgary Flames Foundation ($1M) and Rotary ($1M) will support the development of up to four projects to be constructed between Spring 2025 and Fall 2027.
